Sukuna is a menace, an ancient sorcerer that towers above all the rest. He’s been a menace for a long time, but perhaps he’s become a bit too annoying as a villain. After all, Gege pulled out all the side characters in the world to face this dude and folded every last one. (Spoiler warning for those that have not caught up with the manga)
The Heian-era monster, full of tricks that can counter everything modern Japanese sorcerers throw at him. Even in his time, there wasn’t a sorcerer alive that could rival his power. Gege set him up as a formidable foe, but at this point, who will take down the King of Curses?
We saw his fight against Gojo. That was a decisive point in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga for many of us. Gege put an immovable object against an unstoppable force, but someone had to lose. Of course, the show’s main villain wasn’t going to die. The world Dismantle took care of Gojo (who was offscreened, by the way, something that was a huge shock for everyone), and that was that. The strongest modern sorcerer got cut in half and died. Now, it’s time for everyone else to shine or to die.
Sukuna vs Everyone
The meme of Yuji being a side character is forever relevant, but in these last chapters of the manga, he threw hands with the King of Curses together with Yuta. Quite a tremendous duo, with Yuji finally showing off his potential and Yuta going all out with his Cursed Technique and Rika.
The fight was not as exciting as I expected, as the King of Curses pulled out one hack after another. Nothing Yuji and Yuta did have much effect on the main baddie. In the climax of their showdown, as both Yuji and Yuta suffer a deadly blow, another fighter enters the mix with a sneak attack. Naturally, Yuji and Yuta didn’t die (like most others in this battle), but they were severely wounded.
With them incapacitated, Sukuna drops his guard, and Maki comes in to deal significant damage with a sneak attack. This was a beautiful callback to how Toji stabbed the hell out of Gojo in the same manner. Gege knows how to create epic scenes in these high-octane battles, but his horrible power-scaling system and nonsensical fights overshadow them.
Gege can’t write long battles.
Jujutsu Kaisen manga has been a non-stop battle for the last, I’d say, 50-ish chapters. We get some exposition dumps and similar chapters in between so Gege doesn’t break his back, but most of it is action. After all, we are in the final stages of the manga, and Sukuna is still dominating everyone on the field. While I give props to how the Kenjaku battle went (peak writing, even though I didn’t understand most of the jokes due to cultural differences), it made sense for Kenjaku to go out like that. After all, he only wanted to be entertained, and he was, so he died smiling.
Sukuna, on the other hand, wants to beat the shit out of everyone. He’s a force of nature and all that, which is fine, but his reversed cursed technique has been weakened, he’s missing an arm, he can’t use chants for the world Dismantle, and he’s been stabbed through the heart. Indeed, this means the squad can land the killing blow. After all, Sukuna’s heart is damaged, and he can’t heal; all the while, he has to fight Maki. After Maki gets smashed, it’s time for Kusakabe to enter the fray BECAUSE NO one can fight this monster.
Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 255
To keep things short, Kusakabe got dogged. Another side character is down. Who will Gege summon next to face big Daddy Sukuna?
Rember Miguel, the dude from THE FREAKING MOVIE? Oh, you don’t? The dude who got manhandled by Gojo (who is confirmed to be racist in this chapter as well) is here to fight.
So, everybody is here to fight Sukuna. Yuji is back; Maki also didn’t die and is fighting again. This is it. Finally, they will put an end to this tyranny. NO, NOT REALLY; SUKUNA JUST LANDED A BLACK FLASH. While he didn’t heal immediately, he will regain some strength, that is for sure, as this moment is compared to Gojo’s second Black Flash, which restored his reverse Cursed Technique output.
This back-and-forth between everyone and Sukuna drags on. Without an end in sight, each new chapter introduces five new side characters that we completely forgot about, which manage to wound him somewhat. In the next chapter, Sukuna pulls off ten Black Flashes and kills everyone. The consistency in these battles is nonexistent and starting to show. I just hope Gojo doesn’t get revived.
I recommend you check out our Great Pretender and Delicious in Dungeon reviews to calm your anger. Those will point you toward consistent and enjoyable shows, unlike MAPPA’s Jujutus Kaisen.
