Pseudo Harem Anime Is Not What You Think

Pseudo Harem anime looks like another self-insert show for the lonely loser who doesn’t shower dreaming of a harem and, because it’s anime, getting it. That is what I thought at first glance; just basing my opinion on the title. However, being an avid anime reviewer, I was unable to look away from a good car crash. So I decided to give this one a shot. Lo and behold, my surprise was when I was met with a sweet story about two high school theater nerds falling for each other throughout their high school, college, and career lives.

A Surprise Hit from a Small Studio

Yu Saito wrote the original manga, and Studio Nomad did the anime adaptation. Yu Saito has only two works to their name, one of which is Getsuyoubi wa 2-gen kara, a four-panel comedy series. Studio Nomad is also a smaller studio. They are known for projects like Dropkick on My Devil! and Bungo Stray Dogs Wan! The latter was done in association with Studio Bones.
In Pseudo Harem anime, we follow Eiji Kitahama, a second-year high schooler. He works as a stagehand for the theater club, making props, sets, backdrops, and really anything else that the club might need. Nakamura Rin is the love interest, a genius actress one year his junior, as they go through their everyday lives.

Rin, the Star of the Pseduo Harem Anime

The harem aspect comes into play when Eiji, in a passing conversation, mentions how he would love to be popular and loved by many different girls. Rin starts to show her acting prowess by embodying a cast of different personas: the tsundere, the cool girl, the shy girl, and so on. The story plays with this running theme as they gradually get to know each other and fall in love.
A sweet story unfolds about our protagonists going on cute dates, meeting each other’s families, and meandering through the bittersweetness of high school love and the challenges it poses. The story spans high school, college, and even a bit of their career lives.
